Several years ago I read an article in the Wall Street Journal about the long-term effects on population in countries where people use sex-based selective abortion or infanticide in order to have more sons than daughters. The article inspired me to explore ways we teach girls to cede space and erase themselves. The poem explores self-erasure, and eventually it seemed right to make it an erasure as well.
