Poem: Tom Kelly

Illo for Thomas Kelly's poem.

The Last Copy of the Last Episode of Looney Tunes Featuring Elmer Fudd Who’s Unaware Bugs Bunny Died Three Seasons Ago from Complications Following Open Heart Surgery

Wate autumn’s wosy sunset
gwazes the cabin’s vawnished countewtops
all wittered with yewwowing wecipes
for cottontail confit, summew sawad
with chawgwilled bunny, foddew for the bonfiwe
unwaveling a wisp of smoke thinnew than my scalp’s
wone gway haiw. I wap a tape measuwe awound
my waistwine to see if I can fit my awoha shirt,
kicking & cuwsing my suitcase cwammed
with multiples of a hunting outfit I’ve swept in
for thiwty yeaws. My double-bawwel shotgun
cwogged with cobwebs wanguishes against
the mantel & siwens taunt me from the highway
that’s cemented this once gweat fowest into a median.
I hauw cawdboard boxes to my dented Silvewado pick-up,
study a woad map to measure the distance to Was Vegas,
& guess at how much I can wager on a wopsided woll
of the dice or a mawble skipping on a wheel.
Thwough the cabin’s open doow, I spot
the vacant twophy mount still awaiting that wascally
wabbit, pictuwe the pages of a cawendar stacked
wike pwaying cawds & cawwied away on the bweeze.
