….READING GREAT LITERATURE IN THE BATH

ISSUE 3: NICOLETTE BARISCHOFF

and, of this video, Nicolette writes:

I have spastic cerebral palsy, so I prefer my baths at a temperature most humans and lesser demons would describe as “too hot.” Baths and reading both help me to relax, and quiet my spazzy muscles. They’re also where good ideas come from.

I chose this book, The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her Own Making by Catherynne M. Valente, because it features a very important bath. Valente sums up my thoughts nicely with the following passage:

“Even if you’ve taken off every stitch of clothing, you still have your secrets, your history, your true name. It’s quite difficult to be really naked. You have to work hard at it. Just getting into a bath isn’t being naked, not really. It’s just showing skin. And foxes and bears have skin, too, so I shan’t be ashamed if they’re not.”

Well, being a writer is about as naked as a person can get. I’m not naked in this clip because I’m not writing, and therefore might as well be wearing a suit of armor.
