Bomba

Mi respeto al tambor.
Bow my head
to the gods & ancestors
0000000000000000000 Living
in the beat of my veins.
Proceed with grace, smooth
over every jagged edge
bare feet feel.

Root into legacy,
000000 I dust off my path.
000000000000 Skirt’s hem a broom.
000000000000000000 Dirt floor demons I walk over.
000000000000000000000000 Sweep & sweep & sweep.
000000000000000000 Space cleansed.
000000000000 Circle my ground.
000000 Pace back & forth.
A lioness in my den.

Buleador fuerte keeps
000000 the rhythm in my chest rippling
00000 0000000 through my body. Waves hit
000000000  000000000 me over & over.
000000000000000000000000 This isn’t over. Spirits bang
000000000  000000000 On my sternum & escape
00000 0000000 through my shoulders. Enamorá
000000 del macho. Cucando
al subidor. El primo fiel
No se aparta de mi ritmo.
I go. He follows.

Tempos quicken.
Hard beats drop.
No se para el piquete.
Folds in my skirt run up & down.
000000 Como los taínos
00000 0000000 up & down
000000000  000000000 the mountains.
000000000000000000000000 Like los Africanos
000000000  000000000 up & down the fields.
00000 0000000 Like our children
000000 up & down the streets.

¡Bomba!

Mi respeto al tambor.
