Poem: Mark Mordue

STARLIGHT

Where were you
when Bowie died?
I watched the ocean
I almost cried
I’d missed my children
all the day
I’d watched small birds
I’d seen it hail
I’d seen the lightning
hit a cliff
I’d watched the riders
ride their waves
I looked at ships
way out to sea
I thought of how
amazing people were
the magic in them
that’s released
the heroism
the future now
the way that men
who fall to earth
so burning pale
they nearly burst
with light so bright
it shines for years
the boy the man
the way that they
can come again
to visit us
the stars are dead
and yet they’re here.
